Download this press release

The Collier County Veterans Council is proud to host the annual Armistice Day- Veterans Day 2009 Celebration at Cambier Park in the City of Naples. Armistice Day- Veterans Day, more than ever, should remind us about the men and women in the military protecting the freedoms we value so much.

Armistice Day - Veterans Day 2009

Date:  Nov. 11, 2009
Time:  10:15 a.m. prelude; 10:40 a.m. formal ceremony
Location:  Cambier Park, 8th Street South at 6th Ave. South
               in Old Naples

For information, the public should call (239) 434-2652

James Elson, President of the Veterans Council of Collier County said, “The ceremony will include the reading of the General Order issued at dawn, November 11, 1918 by the Commanding General of the Allied Forces on the battlefield in France directing all combat units to cease fire at 11 a.m., Paris time. This is the only Military document that predates the actual signed Armistice and details the events of that day to come.”

A very moving letter written at the WWI battlefront by 1st Lieutenant Earl A. Carr to his future wife describing first-hand the events that were occurring will be read by Peter Thomas. 1st Lieutenant Carr’s two daughters, Mrs. Emily C. Cozine and Mrs. Mary Watkins, have lived in Naples for many years. The Watkins family generously provided the land on which Cambier Park was created.

This year’s ceremony focus reflects on two men that served our Country 90 years apart, yet both have a direct connection to Naples-- something quite rare. Special tribute will be offered honoring Lance Corporal Dennis J. Burrow, Company G, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 3, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, who died in battle on 7 August 2009 in Helmand, Afghanistan. His name will be added to the Veterans Memorial Wall in Cambier Park.

The Collier County Veterans Council has been promoting Veterans and peace throughout Southwest Florida for more than 30 years. The Collier County Veteran Services Department and Museum will assist with this event. For this ceremony, the media may contact Jim Elson at (239) 860-0009.

Following this celebration, the Collier County Museum will host a USO Show at the Naples Depot located at 1051 5th Ave. S. from noon to 2 p.m. The USO show celebrates music from the time of World War II with cover performers featuring the music of the Andrew Sisters, Marlene Dietrich and Judy Garland.

For information about this event, the public should call the Museum at (239) 252-8476. Media may call Camden Smith, Public Services Division Public Information Coordinator, at (239) 252-5326.
