On Wednesday, March 24, Collier County’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will honor the hundreds of community volunteers that the program has matched with county agencies, local charities and other organizations. During 2009, volunteers gave more than 70,000 hours of their own time to help others.
The annual RSVP Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon will host 250 volunteers of the 600 participating in the program. This is the largest attendance at the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in the RSVP program’s history.
“We are very excited that so many of the volunteers are able to attend, and our luncheon is a small way to say thank you to volunteers who contribute so much to our county,” said Housing and Human Services Director Marcy Krumbine. Krumbine is the Executive Sponsor of Collier County’s RSVP program.
Collier County RSVP is managed by Project Director Brian Kelly, who himself was retired and then returned to work to give back to his community. Kelly has a strong volunteer background including running soup kitchens as well as food for the hungry programs in Washington D.C. He has also previously served on a crisis intervention hotline.
“Our wonderful seniors fill hundreds of valuable volunteer jobs giving back to the community they love,” said Kelly.
RSVP recruits persons over the age of 55 and matches a volunteer’s interests with a local organization in need. The program has referred volunteers to dozens of service organizations including but not limited to Collier County Museums and Libraries, Rookery Bay, Conservancy of SWFL, Naples Community Hospital, St. Matthew’s House and Habitat for Humanity.
National Volunteer Week is April 18 through April 24. The Board of County Commissioners will accept a proclamation recognizing all county volunteers’ efforts at their Tuesday, April 13 meeting.
