The Collier County Bureau of Emergency Services developed the Phoenix Awards program in October 1986 to recognize local emergency responders who were involved in the rescue and treatment of a patient who has suffered sudden cardiac arrest and was brought back to life after being found without a pulse.
The award was named after the mythological Phoenix bird that was consumed by fire, later rose renewed from its ashes, and became a symbol of immortality, resurrection and life after death.
