Commissioner Frank Halas was born in Michigan in 1941. He attended a one-room country school as a child. After graduating from high school, he attended the Detroit Institute of Electronics before enlisting in the US Army. His tour of duty ended with an assignment in Berlin where he served two years in the Signal Corps working with high security communications systems.
On return to civilian life, he married and began to raise a family in Michigan. He enjoyed a long and successful 31-year career working for the Ford Motor Company where the majority of years were devoted to the Advanced Engineering Center specializing in Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) testing. Through these years, he honed his skills for dealing with budgets, large projects and supervising diverse staffs. While at Ford his expertise was advanced through specialized studies at the Henry Ford College in Dearborn. Later his position as Operations Supervisor NVH Road Test and Florida Evaluation Center/AVT brought him from Dearborn to Naples during the winter months to utilize the Ford Test Track located in eastern Collier County. The 16 years he spent coming to that facility endeared the beauty and quiet sophistication of the area to him.
Upon retiring in 1998, his love for the region turned toward more focused civic interests including protecting the Vanderbilt Beach area. His civic activities include membership in the VFW, Taxpayers Action Group, Collier Audubon Society, and the Estuary Conservation Association. He also served on the Vanderbilt Beach MSTU and the Vanderbilt Beach Property Owners Association as President as recently as 2002 prior to being elected to serve as Commissioner for District 2.
Frank and Diane Halas enjoy a large combined family of eight children and seven grandchildren. The Halas' married in 1997 and have called Collier County their fulltime home since 1998. Commissioner Halas considers some of the highest priority items to be the preservation and protection of the Vanderbilt Beach area, restoration of the Vanderbilt Lagoon, enhanced Land Development Codes, better access to the gulf for all citizens and a sound infrastructure of public services. He will focus on these during his term.
